Journal Entry No. 13

A Year of Stories, Stays, and Surprises

What happens when you commit to telling the story… Every . Single . Month .

We didn’t start this journal because we had extra time. Instead, we started it because we knew we had stories.

A bed and breakfast is full of them – quiet moments on the porch, conversations over coffee, the way a stay can shift someone’s entire week. But most of those moments come and go without ever being written down.

So, we decided to change that. One entry at a time.

Why We Started (and What Changed)

At the beginning, this was simple:
Write something once a month. Share a little about what it’s like to stay here.

That was the goal.

What we didn’t expect? How quickly it would change the way we see our own space.

When you know you’re going to write about something, you start noticing more. Suddenly, the small details matter more. As a result, the guest experience becomes something you don’t just create… you observe as it’s happening and that shifted everything.

What Guests Actually Engaged With

Not the things we thought. It wasn’t the polished descriptions or the “perfect stay” language.

Instead, it was the real stuff.

The slightly sarcastic packing advice.
The honest takes on how to actually enjoy a weekend away.
The quiet confidence of a place that doesn’t try too hard.

Guests didn’t just read it, they recognized it. And when they arrived, they already understood the tone of the stay.

Lessons from Writing Consistently

Consistency sounds simple. It’s not.

Some months, the words came easily. Meanwhile, other months felt like staring at a blank page longer than we’d like to admit.

But showing up anyway? That’s where the value is.

Because over time, something starts to build:

  • A rhythm
  • A voice
  • A body of work that quietly does its job long after it’s published

And perhaps most importantly – trust.

Not in a flashy way. In a steady, “this place knows exactly what it is” kind of way.

Yes, we refer to this process as feeding THE GOOGLE

No, we do not actually know what it wants. So we just keep telling good stories and hope for the best.

How Storytelling Shapes Expectations

By the time a guest books, they’ve already spent time with us here.

They’ve read the tone.
They’ve picked up on the details.
They know this isn’t a generic stay.

And that matters.

Because the best guest experiences don’t start at check-in. Instead, they start long before that, with a feeling. In turn, this journal helps shape that feeling.

Where We’re Taking It Next

We’re not done.

If anything, this past year gave us a clearer direction.

More stories, more local insights, and, of course, more of the in-between moments that make a stay memorable.

And yes – more of the personality that makes this place what it is.

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t just a bed and breakfast blog in Missouri.

It’s a record of what it feels like to stay here.

Stay Happy

P.S. — Mr. Ray insists…

Now that the niceties are out of the way.

A few observations. You’ve all done… fine.

The journaling? Acceptable.
The guests? Generally well-behaved – but… I’m still waiting on treats.
The coffee? Strong. As it should be.

I’ve reviewed the past year thoroughly – from the patio, the porch, and several strategic positions that did not require me to move once settled.

Here’s what you got right:

Guests don’t remember perfection.
They remember presence.
They remember being noticed.

(and me… of course they remember me!)

They remember a place with a rhythm.
A point of view.
A certain… standard.

You’re welcome.

If you’d like a more detailed account of my ongoing observations, I’ve documented them accordingly in my dispatch. (Because someone here has to keep proper records.)

One note moving forward: More references to me.

I trust this will be addressed.
